Our day

Our day started off pretty smoothly. I made Indi a new skirt with some free fabric that I got with a pattern I ordered while the kids made superhero masks out of toilet paper rolls.

Here's Indi in her new skirt, superhero mask + "cape" (aka old dishtowel safety pinned to her pajama top). Every superhero needs a cape!

It's been 100 degrees every day here, so we've been spending a lot of time indoors. Today, I decided that we needed to get out of the house. I had packages to mail, we were going to get lunch out, and then head to a local museum.

Jude asked me to tie his superhero mask. I did. He then looked at me and said, "So are you ready to go?" He wanted to go dressed like this:

I told him he at least needed to ditch the pjs. It was his choice whether he wanted to wear a long-sleeved fireman costume and cape when it was 101 degrees outside. He chose to go for it. Alright.

One thing I love about living in a big city is the anonymity of it. I go out to run errands and I never run into anyone I know. That is, unless I go out looking super dumpy. Then I am guaranteed to run into at least one person that I know, and most likely someone I haven't seen in a couple of years. They leave thinking I've just let myself go... but I digress. The good part about living in a big city is that your kid can go out dressed like a firefighter superhero when it's no where near Halloween and you generally don't run into people you know. Strangers seem to think it's funny and enjoy playing along in the realm of make believe. One stranger asked Jude if he could fly. Jude responded, "Well, I can when I'm wearing my cape, but I choose not to." She replied, "Good, because you might fly into one of our ceiling lights."

We left to mail our packages. As I was filling out the paperwork for our four packages, the kids started running around the turning thing that has all of the fancy envelopes. Just as I turned around to correct them, Indigo accidentally tore one of the envelopes. So I am now the proud owner of this:

I tried to get out of there as fast as I could (which wasn't very fast, given all of the paperwork!)

Next we decided to grab some lunch.

Do you guys' kids love to try to hang on those belty looking things that are used to separate lines at the store? Yeah, we're working on that.

We ordered our lunch, sat down and

Indi spilled her chocolate milk all over herself... and her new skirt.

I did not have a change of clothes in the car because, well, I'm not organized like that. I'm lucky if I remember to keep wipes in the car.

So after lunch we returned home to quickly change clothes. We ditched the museum idea, as it was now getting late and instead opted to go ride the train at the zoo. Then I managed to make it to a local fabric store that was having a sale. And the kids were well behaved -- thank goodness! Plus I scored 4 yards of fabric for $30. All's well that ends well, right?

That was a day in our life. Wanna share a day in yours?

  1. Rachel,

Just reading about this day wore me out!! :) AND I have to sheepishly admit that I just finally posted about our day....from Saturday!! Ack! I think maybe you have a cape tucked in there somewhere and it sounds like you handled a hot day peppered with a few challenges beautifully....or least with flexibility and good humor and that's saying a lot!

LOVE the kids in their costumes.....they are both so super cute...that could be their monikers...the Super Cutie Amazing Duo!

And alas its some kind of strange law that you will in fact run into someone when you had the least time to primp....its a cruel, cruel law.... ;)

Love your sense of humor girl!!
Hugs and here's to more outings free of chocolate milk spills...cause guess who else rarely thinks to throw in extra clothes! LOL

  2. Love this post! What a funny day. You truly are a blogger. You took a pic of the spilled milk before rushing to clean it up!

OK, so when can I put in a few sewing orders?!

  3. Gotta love it! I love that your kids love to dress up - mine all do too. I can relate so much to your day - you just have to laugh and enjoy those times. PS - I too am lucky to have wipes and maybe a diaper :)

  4. rebecca,
i would definitely make something for you! my fear in making things for others is that something will happen and i won't be able to fix it. i have to fix things here and there on some of the items i've made for the kids.

re the spilled milk pic -- i normally do not have my camera with me, but i will admit, having it along made the event more funny and less frustrating!

  5. It was great you were able to take photos. One of the great things about blogging is looking at life differently. Ex: spilled milk...This would be funny to blog about...instead of oh no this is horrible LOL! Love to see kids dressed up in public!!

I hope you hear great news soon on the adoption!!

  6. Jude's cool. I'm a fan.

And, yes....the belty things should not be allowed. They are just trouble from start to finish!
