Bibs and a Baby Shower

I'm throwing a baby shower for my friend Dell in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have any baby shower ideas to share? I've never thrown a baby shower before. Ideas, tips, recommendations are all welcome! :)

This weekend, I made some bibs for Dell's baby. Bibs are a really easy sewing project and a great baby gift (at least I think so!). I found some patterns online and so the only thing I needed to buy was the fabric. [I'll post the patterns a little later in this post.]

You only need 1/3 of a yard or so to make 4 or 5 bibs. Well, you actually need 2/3, because you need 1/3 of the cotton patterned fabric of your choice, and then another 1/3 of flannel or terry cloth for the backing. I tell you this because I was in a hurry to get to the fabric store, had the kids in tow, and quickly glanced at the online instructions for the bib which said I needed 1/3 of a yard of fabric. I didn't give it much thought and assumed it was the amount of fabric I needed to make one bib. So, I bought 2 YARDS of patterned fabric and 2 YARDS of flannel.

I now have enough fabric to make 30 bibs.

I made two bibs using this pattern. The pattern recommends using velcro to fasten the bib. I don't like velcro, so I am going to use snaps instead.

I made the first bib according to the pattern. I like bibs that are a little bigger, so I made the second bib a little bigger. I cut the fabric a couple of inches below the actual pattern, following the curve of the pattern. I also made the "c" curve around the neckline bigger and extended the part that goes behind the baby's neck.

I still need to add the snaps to all of my bibs.

I made three bibs based on this pattern. Again, I made the bibs a few inches bigger than the pattern suggested.

The first two are for Dell.

I lined all of the bibs with this flannel fabric.

I made the next bib for our "new baby sister" as the kids like to call her. I cut the fabric upside down and, if you read my last post, you'll know this is the second time I've done this this weekend! The lesson I've learned from this weekend's sewing projects is that I need to work on being present, rather than rushing through my projects!

I will end with pictures of the kids. They had their friend, Aiko, over yesterday and we had a dance party to Christmas music.

Here's my girl who loves to accessorize. (This topic came up in the comments of my last post.) She chose the cowboy hat. Since she was born in TX, I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised. Some day she'll probably drive a pick-up truck with a "Native Texan" bumper sticker.

  1. Baby showers are fun! I threw a baby shower for my best friend a few years back and cut a watermelon to look like a bay carriage...very cute! I think I have pictures I can send...also, her them for nursery was jungle animals, so I had cupcakes in the shape of a lion's head...I do have pictures for that...Also, we had everyone bring a baby picture of themselves and we played a game where everyone had to guess who was who...have also thrown a co-ed baby shower where we had the men compete to see who could change a diaper on a doll the fastest...hilarious! I have plenty of food/decor ideas and maybe more games too...let me know what "theme" if any she has and I will see if I have anymore ideas!

  2. here's a fun, but a bit gross, game that we played at a shower recently. Use newborn diapers and smoosh a different chocolate covered candy bar in each one. The guests can look and smell the diaper to guess what type of candy bar is inside the "poopy" looking diaper! It was hilarious :) Have a great time!

  3. Oh, Dell is going to LOVE these bibs and so will "baby sister"...so incredibly sweet btw!!

Love your accecssory girl and happy dancers....again so incredibly sweet and beautiful!

I have a few ideas, but none of them are new...they were ones used at my baby shower and I loved 'em.

My friends from work asked everyone to bring a book in addition to a gift for Lauren; everyone inscribed the books and not only did it give us an instant library, but years later we cherish reading them and reading what folks wrote! We received board books, bath books and hardbacks for down the road! As a teacher I LOVED it!

Also they make the 7-up/sherbert punch in a new baby bath tub! It was adorable and when it was all gone and rinsed up, I received it as an extra gift, complete with washclothes, baby shampoo, etc....

At a friend shower, they strung a clothesline with sweet clothing items for Lauren; after each game, I received one of the hanging items. It was a gift and a decoration!

Finally, of course their is the diaper cake....with infant toys on top for decor. You are so crafty and the diapers are so welcomed....I know there are patterns you can find online!

I can't wait to see pics...I know these ideas may be old, but they stick out in my mind!
    Hugs!!

  4. I just realized the baby bathtub might have sounded confusing...they served the punch right in a new(cleansed) baby bathtub and then we received it after the shower!! :) Sorry if that was confusing!

    :) Happy Monday!

  5. Such cuteness, both the bibs and the kids! Since you are crafty, one idea would be to have everyone "decorate" onesies for the baby. I have been to two showers like this and not only is it a lot of fun, but the baby to be then has unique and super cute onesies! (Think puffy paint, buttons, ribbons, and stencils with fabric paint.) Most of all, have a great time!

  7. Had to laugh at the punch-in-the-bathtub idea. I TOTALLY knew exactly what you meant, but is it a little stomach turning anyway to drink punch out of a bathtub? My first thought was YUCK (even though I knew it was new and clean) Maybe I have a weak stomach....I just know how yucky those tubs can get so clean or not, drinking punch out of one would be hard for me! :)

There's always the -taste-the-baby-food-and-guess-what-flavor game. That was a hit with my 5th graders when we had my baby shower at school :), but I'm fairly certain it's a hit at any age. Then there is one where everyone gets to wear a pin (usually a diaper pin, but a regular safety pin works too). Then, no one is allowed to say "baby". Anytime anyone says it and you hear it, you get to take their pin (or their string of pins). the person with the most pins at the end of the party gets a prize.

Both totally unoriginal ideas, but there you go! :) I've never been to a baby shower with a uber-cool theme or a really memorable game. I think most of the people I know aren't all that creative! :)

You could do a take on the wedding thing where people write their wishes for the bride and groom on the mat of a photo frame. You could do that for a baby too, right, and it might be a really nice keepsake!

Or pass around a book for everyone to write a wish in for the baby as a keepsake (like the 100 good wishes quilt, but without the quilt part).

Those are my up-at-3AM-with-a-sick-girl ideas...take them for what they are......

OH, and I've made diaper cakes before. They are SUPER easy and GREAT decorations!!! People always love those! They are deceptively expensive though because, well, diapers are so darn expensive!!!

  8. PS- the don't-say-baby game is annoying. I could never win that game in a million years!! :)

PPS- I'm having lots of fun with multiple hyphenated words tonight! :)

  9. my ideas were already suggested - i think...making the onesies (be sure to buy some in various sizes) - i'm still using hand-me-down ones on mallory now from griffin's shower....everyone bring their favorite children's book to create a new library for new baby....i loved the diaper cake i received....hmmm...can't think of anything else right now but i bet you could find fun ideas by searching online somewhere...

  10. Great bibs! (and I would have never noticed the pattern being upside down!) :) All my suggestions were already said...diaper cake is awesome, you can add as much or little to it as you want. Everyone at my shower really liked the melting different candy bars in the diapers game, it was a hit! LOVE the book idea, you can never have enough! You could get one nice "prize" and have everyone who wants bring a pack of diapers (different sizes) and if they do their name goes into a drawing for that prize. I can't think of anything else right now, but if I do I will let you know. :)
