Motherhood as a Rite of Passage

At a traditional American baby shower, the emphasis is often on the baby. So being, it can sometimes overlook the great change that occurs as a women becomes a mother. This is a rite of passage that deserves to be honored. I wanted the baby shower I'm throwing for Dell to not only focus on the baby, but also to celebrate Dell as she becomes a mother.

My invitations (well, evites) said, "When a baby is born, so is a mother. Celebrate a beautiful new life." I asked that each guest bring a blessing, quote, word of advice, or prayer that they had for Dell and her new family.

This morning I received a comment on my last post from Rebecca from La Dolce Vita which I think goes well with the theme of celebrating the mother-to-be. She said that when she hosts a baby shower, she likes to place quotes and verses about babies and mothering throughout the house. She writes them on pretty paper and places them everywhere (on the food table, coffee table, bathroom, etc).

I love this idea. But, I need your help! I've been searching for verses, quotes, poems, and have come up pretty much empty-handed. It's harder than I expected to find meaningful words about mothering. Do you have any favorite quotes/poems/verses about motherhood? If so, please let me know. I'd love to read them, write them on pretty paper and sprinkle them throughout my house at the shower! Maybe I'll even save them for when I'm having a bad day! ;) Or better yet give them to Dell as a gift and make an additional copy for myself, so we can both have some encouragement at our fingertips on the days that we need it!

  1. Rachel,

I came by to thank you again for always always making me feel so special in the comments you leave! You always validate my efforts and intuit my meanings; you just always "get" me!! I value that dearly!

Of course I also stopped by cuz yes, I'm addicted to your fabulous blog! :) There I said it...my name is Lisa and I love your blog! :-)

This idea is inspired....I love every aspect about it and your evite was beautiful too. I don't have anything right off the top of my head to contribute, but if something comes to mind, I'll pop back again! :)

BUT it occured to me that the evite you sent, copied on pretty paper or hand written, could be the first one you use....its lovely and came from your heart!

    Just a thought.....
    Hugs!

  2. Lisa, I cannot take credit. It's not my idea. Celebrating becoming a mother as a rite of passage is a world wide tradition. There is a ceremony called a "blessingway" which is like a shower but adds a spiritual/emotional aspect and the focus is mainly on the mother. I am trying to incorporate aspects of the blessingway into the shower. :)

Oh, i also didn't come up with the evite wording. That was just the card I chose.

    Are you disappointed??!! :)

i do love your idea of using the evite wording on one of the cards. thank you! I'm using it!!
