Progress is being made...

... but first, a funny story.

Yesterday Indigo put on these noise-canceling headphones, looked at Dan and me and said, "Uh-oh, now you guys can't hear me!"

If you look at the back left corner of the above picture you will see I have a project in the making. I am making a scrappy log cabin quilt. It's going to take me a long time to make, so I am just going to work on it a little at a time, here and there when I can.

I'm not sure who this quilt will go to, but I know it will be someone special. I was thinking of making it for the new baby, but Dan said he wanted to be a part of that quilt. He wanted to help choose the fabrics and participate in making it. When we made Indigo's baby quilt, we choose the fabric together, then Dan did all of the cutting and squaring up while I did the sewing. When we made Indigo's quilt, I was very new to sewing, it was my first quilt, and I felt Dan's help was as much out of necessity as it was out of desire on his part. Also, Dan is now a talented wood-worker, so I assumed he would make something for the baby out of wood. Anyway, I found it so endearing that Dan wanted to help make the new baby's quilt!

So on to the progress being made!

I finished the diaper cake and it was soooo easy! I followed the instructions here.

Yesterday I cut out the rest of the freezer paper stencils. Seventeen people are said to be coming to the shower, so there were lots of stencils to be made. Since I knew what I was doing, it really didn't take very long. Dan took the kids out for the morning and I finished the stencils in a few hours. I traced all of the images (rather than sketching them by hand), except for the whale and the four-leaf clover. Dan drew those free hand. I am horrible draw-er. I tried to draw the whale and it looked more like the male contribution to the making of an embryo, if you know what I mean. I'll leave it at that.

I saved the best for last (in my opinion). My all-time favorite stencil -- the sock monkey.

  1. I love hearing the funny things kids say! And I love the idea of your husband helping you with the baby quilt. My husband is very encouraging about my sewing and crafting, but he's never participated in it. It's a great idea.

  2. Rachel my friend....you put the rest of us to shame! How do you squeeze it all in? Impressive ....very impressive! And I know you do it all out of love and as a creative outlet!

The quilt will be wonderful; whoever it goes too is fortunate!

I love the idea of the quilt for the baby being collaborative; what a keepsake that will be for her!

AND the diaper cake.....wow! Just gotta say that its the most elegant one I've ever seen! Fantatic!

Cute Indi story too.....it reminds me of when Lauren was about that age and we were playing hide n seek; she hid her top half under pillows and presumed her whole body was hidden...LOL....she couldn't see me, so it followed logic that I couldn't see her! :)
    Cute cute!

  3. Your husband rocks! That is so sweet he wants to help with the new baby's quilt!

The diaper cake looks GREAT! You can do just about anything can't you!? :)

And the onsies are going to be perfect for the new little baby. What a fun thing to do for a shower.

  6. WHY oh WHY don't I live in Central Texas...so I could come over to your place and we could craft together and you could teach me your tricks and I could make new patchwork valances for Jude & Indy's rooms???
Oh wait, because my job is in Chicago and Gregg's a SAHD...that's why.
But geez louise girl, we need to start some on-line craft projects. Like picking out a project a month and email progress, etc.
You are AMAZING!!! You inspire me to get back on that sewing machine, that scrap-book, those fused-calico fabric-cut-out decal onsies that I never finish.
Oh, and LOVE the Indy story...she is such a precious little girl!

  7. These are super cute and I can't wait to see the finished products! You must have a very steady hand. I think my deer might have looked like a giraffe and my caterpillar would have looked more like a butterfly by the time all was said and done.
