Shoes for the new walker

I was organizing my sewing shelves this week (I post this picture to document that they were at one time organized)

and realized I had a lot of smaller pieces of fabric. Not exactly scraps, but pieces best suited for smaller projects. As I was folding some of Anna Maria's voile, I decided it would be great fabric for a pair of shoes for Evie.

So, this afternoon I went online and found this tutorial.

The shoes can either be cloth or leather soled. For the latter, the author recommends using leather from an old or thrifted purse. I remembered I had an old purse that got lots of use and as a result got really dingy, thus was sitting on a shelf.

It had a good life as a purse. Time for it to be repurposed.

When I cut out the soles, I was pleased to discover that the leather on the inside of the purse (which was previously covered by a cotton lining) looked brand new. An unexpected bonus!

These shoes were so easy to make, especially if you read the directions carefully. (I may or may not be speaking from experience. Ahem.) Even with the mistakes I made, they sewed up in an hour or two this evening. Perfect therapy after a stressful afternoon with the kids. I must have worn Evie for at least three hours today. She was having a hard day.

And they fit. Woohoo!

I was on the phone with my mom and told her that I made a pair of shoes for Evie. "On account of the Great Depression and all", my husband quips. I'm married to a real joker, that guy.
