Six months!

Iris turned six months old a couple of weeks ago.  I can honestly say this has been the fastest six months of my life.

I've been told fourth babies are generally super laid back.

Or they're really demanding.  You know, to ensure they get plenty of attention.

Apparently it's usually one or the other.  This is what 'they' tell me.

Iris falls in the latter camp.  She likes to make herself known.  The girl's got needs and she's not afraid to express them.

Some might even call her high maintenance.  I read a study recently which claimed that East African babies who expressed their needs loud and clear had higher survival rates as compared to their mellower counterparts.  We call her a well-adapted baby.

She can sleep for hours in my carrier in the middle of the chaos of Indigo's preschool fiesta.  But if I try to lay her in bed and ever so gently slink away, she often wakes up in minutes.

Thankfully, the kids are understanding of her ways.

Dan and I are, too.  She won't be a baby forever, after all.  Really, we've never enjoyed a baby more.  With each child, we've learned to surrender more, to feel less entitled, to welcome each one just as they are.  It's freeing, really.  Especially when you have well-adapted babies.

Oh, there have been harder days, too.  Days when I get nothing done and times when, in the daily grind, my work here feels pretty insignificant.  The laundry, the dishes, what Dan calls pushing back the ocean.  Then Dan reminds me of a quote by Gandhi - Your work may seem insignificant, but it's very important that you do it.

Maybe we all need to be reminded of that now and then.
