Lately

*Tarikua is in the process of getting sisterlocks put in her hair.  It's essentially 400 tiny dreads.  It's a permanent, natural hair style.  She's about 20 hours into the process and only has about 4 hours left.  She has done so well sitting through the installation.  We love them!

* My amazing goddaughter Violet spent most of the weekend with us.  She says the funniest things which kept Dan and I laughing the entire time.  The kids absolutely adored having her here.  We went to a petting zoo, I made these brownies, and Dan popped popcorn while they had a movie night.   Indigo, Tarikua, and Violet stayed up until almost midnight, giggling under the covers by the light of the twilight turtle.  There was swimming, art, nail painting and tea parties.   Indigo cried when it was time to say good-bye.

*Both Jude and Iris somehow managed to find a few quiet moments to themselves this weekend.

* All four of our caterpillars hatched into butterflies. (We lost two the time before so this was fabulous news!).

*Dan and I just registered for the Idea Camp, a collaborative, conversational conference in Austin next month on the topic of human care.

From the website:

This September we invite you to add your voice to this important conversation of caring for Orphaned & Vulnerable Children, Empowering Women, Organizational Health, and Leadership.

We want to engage in fresh, honest and transformative conversations with leading thinkers and practitioners on topics including how the people of the church care for the poor, the vulnerable, the other and self while unpacking how differences of gender, race, mental health, world view, and age influence our approach.  Our desire is to live life as God’s loving expressions of grace and hope to our world through tangible acts of care for all of humanity. We need your voice, your experience, and your presence in this lifelong pursuit.

They don't have childcare available, so Dan and I are going to take turns attending.  We can't wait!  If you're interested in attending, this video provides more information.

I hope you had a relaxing weekend!

  1. What a lovely glimpse into your days! Tarikua must be so patient to spend so long getting her hair done. How long does it stay like that (totally clueless, here!)? Are you studying butterflies as part of your homeschool? I've been looking into curriculum, and it's so very overwhelming! I think I've maybe found one, but I'm not totally sure yet :) Decisions, decisions!

    1. I was totally clueless initially as well. :) I learned about this style when I spotted someone with it while I was out running errands and then nervously approached her and asked who did her hair. It's actually a permanent style, so she would have to grow her roots out and then cut her hair short to remove them. Every 6 weeks she will have them re-tightened. It will take several months to a year for them to fully "lock" down to the ends. But they are a natural hairstyle. We just spritz them with rosewater each morning and wash them very carefully every two weeks with a gentle shampoo, no conditioner. You detangle them with your fingers. We used to have to use so many products and detangling took a long time, so this is a great, low maintenance style for a little girls - but lots of adults wear them, too!
We found the butterflies and are doing some child-directed learning, so since the kids were interested in the butterflies we learned all about them, which was lots of fun. It's school without feeling like school. We are 7 weeks into our school year and it's going so great. I am so happy with the curricula we chose. they are really a perfect fit for our family! Good luck choosing yours! If you have any questions about ours, don't hesitate to ask. :)

  2. Tarikua looks gorgeous as always - love her new 'do! And I love Iris's hair too, btw. I totally see Maggie getting little bobs in her future! Joe practically has a bob right now, come to think of it, I am terrible at scheduling cuts. ;-)

Butterflies! So beautiful. What a lovely experiment/ritual.

  3. I totally saw this, but was on my phone! That's what happened yesterday, I tried to post from my phone. The locs look amazing! I think Mez would love it too. You're homeschooling now. You are mom of the year. This morning we are having "tv camp"...just so I can look at your blog. :) I have not been able to do enough sewing lately. I don't feel whole. I don't know how you find the time...especially now that you are homeschooling! Your family looks great and that is such amazing news that you are keeping Tarikua's given name. BTW we still haven't turned in Mezmur's readoption papers!!! Yikes. I have gotten so bad at keeping up our blog or looking at other blogs, but yours is a favorite! This fall I plan on more sewing and more blogging!
