Serena Baby Dress (Numero Tres)

Dan and I like to say that Iris thinks she's 12.  She tries to help herself to food in the refrigerator or pantry, get her own glass of water, or yes, even change her own diaper (not pretty).   She takes I-can-do-it-myself to a whole new level.  As a DIYer myself, I can only sigh and acknowledge she might get it from me.

Iris aka Ramona Quimby

Last week, Iris pushed a chair against the wall and climbed up the back of it to turn the lights off and on - great fun for a toddler.  Dan walked over and told her she needed to get down.  She was not pleased.  Not pleased at all.  When he reached for her, she threw herself back, hitting the corner of her eye on the wooden arm of the chair.  One ER visit and two stitches later, she was as good as new... only with a black eye.  Jude and Indigo said the look would've worked well for a Frankenstein costume for Halloween this year.  :/

So big!

I made this dress a couple of weeks ago, but after last week's commotion I'm only now getting around to photographing it.  (And frankly, I didn't want a photo of my babe with a black eye floating around the interwebs.)

This is my third Serena Baby dress.  You can find the pattern here.  I added only an inch and a half to the length this time, making it more tunic than dress. (The pattern is meant for a 0-12 mo old.)

I really like that this pattern is reversible.  I love whimsical prints on the wee ones.  I used this and this, both Heather Ross prints.  I also think this top will be fantastic for layering.  I had hoped to pair it with a long-sleeved tshirt (underneath), but it was 95 degrees today.  Yes, really.  Even the leggings were a stretch.

I decided to not use snaps and opted for velcro instead (inspired by this).  I prefer this look to the snaps and would use it again.  I did change my bobbins threads so they would match the prints, respectively.

These last few photos are classic Iris.

The girl's high on life!  We're so glad to have her.

  1. very cute. My little one had an identical gash near her eye at almost exactly the same age! Vitamin E oil (snip a capsule open) rubbed on there once the stitches come out can help reduce scarring. Nothing seems to help the ferocious independent will of a toddler though!

  2. She is so adorable! And adventurous! We've had our fair share of black eyes around here too, but thankfully, no stitches (yet. furiously knocks on wood). I love this little pinafore. I could see it in corduroy for a fall/winter dress ...

  3. Iris is gorgeous! She sounds like Lucy, who is also fiercely independent, adventurous and just plain crazy! She hasn't had a black eye or stitches, but managed to dislocate her elbow. Ouch! I just love the little pinafore you made. So sweet!

  5. Oh, that last photo melts my heart! Such a twinkle in her eyes and lovely smile:) She sounds a lot like my youngest - a spark plug who is exhausting to parent but makes life much more colorful:)So glad that Iris' injury is on the mend.
Your reversible tunic is gorgeous! And I'm impressed that you even took the time to change bobbin thread to match:) This will certainly be an all-season top as it looks adorable sleeveless, but also can be layered in the cooler weather.

  6. Just now catching up (seems to be the story of my life lately), and I got quite a kick out of this one! Isn't it so hard to appreciate the independence and tenacity that will serve them well later, when it's so difficult to deal with now? ;-) Also love the Ramona Quimbly reference--so right!
