Halloween 2013 : A Sassy Scarecrow

May I present to you my third poof of tulle, a sassy scarecrow.

scarecrow

I can't take any credit for the clever name.  It came with the pin, and was created (and sold out) by this talented Etsy artist.   My kids and I loved the name... but especially the kids.  I'm pretty sure they told anyone and everyone who stepped foot in our house last month that Iris was going to be a sassy scarecrow for Halloween!

scarecrow

I made the tulle skirt in the same way that I made Indigo and Tarikua's costumes (details here).

my scarecrow

I made the hat using felt and burlap ribbon.  The burlap ribbon was Dan's idea, as was cutting the ribbon into irregular shapes and fraying them a bit before glueing them onto the hat.

I am well aware of the fact that I won the lottery when I married him.

Dan's mom is the epitome of good taste.  She really is like Martha Stewart, in all of the very best ways.  She makes a meal that not only tastes delicious but is also prepared in a way that looks beautiful, too.  She used to sew professional-looking clothes for her family when they lived in Liberia.  She can throw a killer party.  She perfects the details.  Each and every one of them.

Dan learned from the very best, so this stuff comes as second nature to him.

I love that Dan will always give me his honest opinion about my work, even if that means me tweaking or redoing something.  There's no one I'd rather collaborate with more.   He's pretty much the best partner a person could ask for.

Jude was my only kid who did not want a mama-made costume this year thankyouverymuch.  Which I guess I'm grateful for because this one would've been a doozy to replicate.

And they were off.

Dan says he went as suburban dad. Yeah, we're wild and crazy like that.

  1. Sassy scarecrow is spectacularly cute! Love it, and yes, I'm a little jealous of Dan's fabulous suggestions:)
Two other thoughts that come to my mind: I have never in my life "done" Halloween in shorts and tshirts - late October in Michigan means putting a winter coat over our costumes. I envy your warm weather! And secondly, that last photo is so great! What a beautiful family you have, yes, even Iron Man:)

  2. I was jealous when he knew how to wield a hot glue gun, but knowing when to use Burlap ribbon, or even what that is?! He's certainly a catch!
(and sadly some "suburban dad's" are actually the spookiest characters there are. :( )
The whole family look great and it's a blessing you didn't have to stencil paint that iron man costume.

    1. well, i did have him hang a fall wreath above our mantle using burlap ribbon, so he knew we had it. but he is incredibly creative. :) and stencil painting that entire costume? now that would've been something. :0

    1. thank you so much. we had a great time. i was glad that the little girls kept their costumes on the whole time. i wasn't sure how'd it go, particularly with Iris! but she had a blast and tried her very best to say 'trick or treat'.
